About woods -
Some builders make every wood other than sitka spruce and Indian rosewood a costly upgrade. We have large stocks of SE Asian rosewood, pomele bubinga, sapele, Malaysian blackwood, koa, cocobolo, zirocote, and curly Oregon myrtle. Also, we have many excellent tops of Engelmann spruce, California redwood, and western red cedar.
There is no upcharge for any of these woods. We only charge extra for highly unusual or very expensive woods.
How about Brazilian rosewood?
We occasionally build with Brazilian rosewood, but we don’t like to. Why? While Brazilian rosewood sounds great, we feel many many other woods sound just as nice, and are more beautiful. Also, these other woods are not the product of total destruction and deforestation.
As a Boy Scout, I came to believe in conservation and wise use of resources. I am amazed when one of my more liberal and hypocritical luther friends goes on a tirade against petroleum exploration or nuclear energy, and a few minutes later shows me his newest Brazilian rosewood guitar.
Besides, we find Brazilian rosewood so oily and gummy that it really screws up our tools.
Upgrades - The only upgrades on Lame Horse Guitars are:
custom inlays - inlays in addition to our standard horse at the first fret of the fingerboard.
electronics - Any pickup system can be installed. We prefer B Band A1.2 or A2.2 systems. We feel they are the closest thing to the real acoustic sound of the guitar with their condenser microphone type technology. Also these B Band systems give the player excellent controls that reside in the soundhole, and require no holes to be cut in the side of the guitar.
