Why is an acoustic instrument builder creating a double neck electric guitar? The wood told us to do it. It is so rare to find a beautifully clear piece of wood this large, it would be a shame to cut it up, therefore double neck - top neck 25" scale, bottom neck 27.5" baritone. TV Jones Classic and Magnatone pickups, custom Lame Horse tailpieces, fancy bubinga back, 7 piece mahogany and curly maple necks.
When I saw this huge slab of mahogany cut over 60 years ago, it just all took form in my brain - a thinline archtop double neck.
Tonight, 09/06/2011, I got the necks properly fitted to the body of the double neck. I weighed the entire instrument. it weighed 8.9 lbs. Of course that is without hardware, but much more wood will be removed from the neck. Some weight may need to be added to the butt end of the thing to balance it. However, I think it may have a chance to weigh in about the same as the heaviest Les Paul models. I think that is astounding for a double neck. I can't wait to hear it. I am really liking the design. This body can be made into a 6 string - 12 string, a 6 string - short scale bass, or a 6 string - baritone like this one.
Now it is time for a nice vintage tobacco brown finish.
03/02/12 - double neck prototype is pretty much completed - just a couple of inlays to complete. Final weight 11lbs. The balance is pretty good. Now Jeremy will plug it into one of his vintage amps and see how it sounds. Good I bet.
